Camera Lens Mounts

Different make cameras and lenses usually are not compatible, and, normally, you can't use Nikon lenses on Samsung cameras, for example. This can be solved by using lens mount adapters.

How to identify lens mounts?

Most of the lenses are very easy to identify if you know how.

M39 (Russian), M42, T-mount, LTM (Leica), L39 (Leica) mounts differs from currently popular bayonet mount, and are based on screw mount thread. M42 lenses have widest thread pitch size which is 1mm, T-mount thread pitch size is 0.75mm and you can see buy eye that it looks narrower. Leica thread has a bit different angle.

Rest of the lens mounts are bayonet and breech-lock mounts. The breech-lock mount uses rotating ring on the lens that has to be tightened when lens are attached to the camera.

Bayonet mount have, usually, three tabs around the base of the mount which fit into appropriately sized recesses in the camera lens mounting plate. Different bayonet mounts can differ by several factors:

1) Mount circle size and screw alignment;

2) Mount tab shapes and sizes;

3) Electronic contacts. This is the primary and easiest way to identify as various manufacturers electronic contact shape, size and alignment may differ vastly.
